Review

Peak Design usually packs its bags with camera-oriented organization and plenty of attachment points, but the City Backpack 15L goes the other way. It is a pared-back everyday bag with a slim outline, minimal branding and just enough storage for daily essentials. A 22L sibling shares most of the same design; the 15L version appeals to anyone who wants a bag that hugs the body and does not look oversized when only partly filled.

Specs at a glance

The 15L measures 17.7 x 11.2 x 6 inches (45 x 28.4 x 15.2 cm). Listed materials are nylon and polyester with a PFAS-free DWR coating, bluesign-compliant fabrics, YKK zippers and aluminum hardware. Carry-on suitability is estimated by comparing the manufacturer's dimensions to airline limits, so it is only a guide: a packed bag changes shape, and airlines interpret their rules differently.

Design and materials

From a distance it hardly reads as a Peak Design product. A small logo near the top is the only branding on an otherwise clean exterior. The Mono Shell 660D fabric has a lightly crinkled texture that adds interest without looking overly technical, and together with the tapered build it keeps the bag in shape. Even when full, the narrower top section resists sagging; pressed down, it pops back into form, so the bag stays tidy all day.

Hidden exterior storage

Instead of obvious front pockets, storage is tucked into the seams. A zippered pocket runs along the top rear edge, and placing it toward the back stops the front of the bag from drooping under weight. It holds two slip pockets and a key leash with a small plastic carabiner, a sensible amount of organization that keeps the outside uncluttered.

The side pockets are just as discreet. One is meant for a bottle of up to about 24 ounces, though taller bottles, including some 24-ounce Hydro Flasks, can stop its zipper from closing fully. Elastic gives a little extra width, but a smaller bottle produces the neatest look. The other side pocket shares that construction but adds two internal mesh pockets for small accessories; it can also take a bottle, at the cost of making that mesh organization less useful.

A standout detail is the BagLev aluminum hanging hook. It works like a permanently attached Hero Clip-style hook that does not swivel around the way a removable clip can, and a rubberized section protects surfaces from scratches. It is genuinely handy for keeping the bag off the floor in restroom stalls, offices, airports and similar places.

Harness, comfort and fit

The carry system suits a 15L bag: two padded shoulder straps with no sternum strap or hip belt and no way to add either. The straps are wrapped in soft mesh padding with an almost memory-foam feel, and their contouring lets them rest comfortably against the shoulders, even on bare skin in warm weather. They proved comfortable across a range of torso sizes and are the highlight of the fit. Without a sternum strap there is less load distribution, but for everyday weights in a bag this size that is rarely a problem.

Small aluminum adjusters handle sizing: pulling them outward loosens the straps and pulling them upward cinches them quickly, an easy system to use on the move. The main shortcoming is the absence of strap keepers, so anyone bothered by dangling webbing will need to improvise.

On medium builds the bag rests low, near the top of the tailbone, yet its narrow profile prevents it from feeling bulky. It stays close to the body and reads as an everyday bag rather than a shrunken travel pack.

Main compartment

Twin YKK zippers open into a simple, undivided main compartment, which works well enough at this size. A tech pouch and a fairly thick hoodie fit with some vertical space to spare, but because the bag is slim, bulky items fill it quickly; flatter clothing and slim pouches suit it better. A zippered pocket on the inner side wall is a good home for less-used items such as wipes, chargers or a power bank, and it does not visibly distort the exterior.

The bag cannot stand upright by itself, which is a small inconvenience when loading it on the floor, though the hook offers another way to keep it upright and elevated. Capacity also has a catch: the bottle pockets take up internal volume, so whatever sits in them pushes into the main compartment. A full bottle can claim a surprising amount of room, and removing it frees space immediately, meaning the 15L figure is less straightforward than it looks.

Laptop compartment

The padded laptop section is kept apart from everything else and includes a tablet sleeve, two slip pockets, a pen slot and a dedicated laptop sleeve toward the back. A false bottom leaves about an inch of clearance under the laptop for drop protection, and a concealed mesh pocket is sized for an AirTag.

Access is the bag's weakest point. The upper mesh pocket hangs over the laptop compartment and gets in the way even with a modest 13-inch laptop. Tucking the mesh aside makes it manageable, but frequent laptop users may find it irritating. A 16-inch laptop will technically go into the 15L model, but it sits over the false bottom and leaves the upper corners less protected; for that size, the 22L version is the better choice with more suitable fit and protection.

Verdict

The City Backpack 15L is a sleek, comfortable everyday carry with clever touches like hidden pockets, excellent straps and the integrated hook. Its streamlined shape does limit capacity, bottles eat into interior space, and laptop access could be smoother, but for light daily loads it is an appealing, low-key choice.
