Review

The Fjallraven High Coast Pro Foldsack 26 is a lightweight, adaptable daypack with a fold-over top and a front pocket that converts into a separate crossbody bag. It is simple to live with every day and has useful travel tricks, but its soft, unstructured build will not appeal to every buyer.

Key specs

Capacity is 26 liters and the pack weighs 1.54 lb (0.7 kg). It measures 18.1 x 11.8 x 7.87 in (46 x 30 x 20 cm), houses laptops up to 16 inches, and is made in Indonesia from polyamide and polyethylene with YKK zippers and aluminum hardware. It is covered by Fjallraven's warranty policy.

Strengths and weaknesses

On the plus side, the low weight makes it easy to carry, the breathable back panel and shoulder straps keep it comfortable, and the removable front pocket doubles as a handy crossbody sling. On the downside, it can look limp when only lightly loaded, the mesh padding feels scratchy on bare skin, and the outer pockets offer little protection for delicate items.

Materials and exterior

The fabric is a UHMWPE ripstop blending 93% recycled polyamide with 7% polyethylene. At 700 grams the bag is very light, yet the material feels tough enough for daily duty. Its slightly crinkled ripstop has little inherent stiffness, so the pack can take on a lumpy shape depending on its contents and will not stand upright when empty.

YKK zippers with a PU coating for added weather resistance run smoothly and reliably. Metal G-hooks secure the fold-over closure and look the part while staying durable, and Woojin buckles and adjusters handle the rest; all hardware performed without fault in testing.

A single side bottle pocket has an adjustable upper section, so it secures anything from a 12-ounce bottle up to a 40-ounce one. Side compression straps cinch the pack down when it is not full, which noticeably improves both its shape and how it carries and stops contents from shifting. The top grab handle is unpadded and unventilated but light and adequate for quick lifts.

Harness and comfort

The back panel is generously padded and well ventilated, with large mesh openings that let air flow freely, so the pack is more comfortable than its weight suggests. The mesh is somewhat coarse, which is noticeable without a shirt but rarely an issue with one on. A modest amount of structure is built in, though not enough to make the bag rigid; that suits its lightweight aims, but people who want a pack that holds its form may prefer something sturdier.

Shoulder straps use the same airy padded mesh, slightly thinner than on the back panel. They stay comfortable in everyday use, though the rough mesh is more of a factor here when wearing tank tops. The sternum strap clips into fixed ladder points rather than sliding on a rail; that rules out fine-tuning, but it never slips out of place and the available positions are sufficient. Elastic keepers on the shoulder and sternum straps tidy loose webbing.

Pockets and storage

The interior is lined with 100% recycled polyamide. Opposite the bottle pocket, where a second bottle sleeve might be expected, sits a zippered side pocket with no internal organization. It is easy to reach with the pack slung over one shoulder, making it handy for a phone, wallet, keys or a snack, though valuables are better kept elsewhere in crowded places since others could potentially get into it.

The lower front pocket is large and has its own depth rather than stealing room from the main compartment, so it suits bulky quick-grab items such as a hat, gloves or a packable jacket. It offers little padding, so fragile gear needs its own protection.

The upper front pocket is the standout. It attaches with small metal tabs and the top compression straps, acting as an extra external compartment, but with its strap added it becomes a standalone crossbody bag. It is very small, has no organization, and carries more like a sacoche than a typical sling. For travel the idea works well: use the Foldsack as the main backpack, then unclip the mini bag for exploring at the destination without packing a second bag. Switching between setups is quick.

The main compartment uses a rolltop-style fold-over that can extend capacity when needed, while the compression straps keep a partial load under control. Inside are a zippered pocket stitched only along its top edge, hanging almost like a tag but doing its job, plus two liner pockets for separating small items when wanted. The fleece-lined, padded laptop sleeve fits machines up to 16 inches and is raised off the bottom of the bag for added protection. Access is internal only, which some may find slower than an external laptop opening, but it keeps the computer integrated with the main compartment and works well.

Durability notes

Despite the very light fabrics, the materials and hardware held up well over the testing period, and the harness gave no trouble. The sling strap is not especially robust, but it is replaceable if it fails, which has not happened. How the mesh back panel and shoulder straps age remains to be seen.

Verdict

The High Coast Pro Foldsack 26 is a light, comfortable and versatile pack that works for both daily use and travel, and its detachable sling adds real utility with almost no extra weight or hassle. It is not for everyone: the lack of structure can make it look floppy or show the outline of its contents, and the ripstop style will not suit all tastes. For anyone wanting an easygoing lightweight pack with a clever second carry option, it is an easy recommendation.
