Surfshark VPN Review: Features, Security and Pricing

Surfshark VPN offers many worthwhile features and generally strong performance, but two of its headline promises deserve more transparency.

Unlimited connections come with limits

Although Surfshark advertises unlimited device connections, restrictions do apply in practice.

Although Surfshark advertises unlimited device connections, restrictions do apply in practice. An account was suspended for sharing the service with friends and family, which Surfshark treated as abuse. In a test where Surfshark was installed on 20 devices with three profiles each, repeated every week, the account was suspended. Marketing materials and influencer promotions that highlight unlimited connections and sharing are therefore misleading, and Surfshark should state clearly how many simultaneous connections are actually permitted.

Data collection

Surfshark does gather some information about its users. The managed devices section of its account portal shows device types and connection times, which sits uneasily with the service's privacy-focused messaging.

Verdict

Surfshark remains a capable VPN, but its claims around unlimited connections and privacy need to be clearer.
