Icedrive Review: Cloud Storage Plans and Features

Icedrive offers a good interface and works well technically, but with no Mac sync app and very slow support it is hard to recommend for Mac users.

Review

Icedrive is a cloud storage service whose interface is well designed and which functions properly from a technical standpoint. For Mac owners, however, one gap outweighs those strengths: there is no Mac app for syncing.

The missing Mac sync app

Without a sync client, folders have to be removed and re-uploaded by hand, a slow process that also consumes a lot of bandwidth. That makes the service impractical for everyday use on a Mac. A Mac sync app was among the improvements announced on a public roadmap timeline on the Icedrive website, but that timeline has since been taken down. The company says it is still working on the app, yet a lifetime subscriber reports that more than 1.5 years after purchase, it has still not arrived.

Support and communication

Communication is sparse. There is no newsletter, and posts on Facebook draw almost no response. The helpdesk is very slow, with replies taking days when they come at all. The Icedrive app in the Mac App Store holds a rating of 2.3.

Verdict

The good interface and reliable technical performance make the shortcomings all the more disappointing, but Icedrive cannot be recommended for Mac users until a proper sync app is available.
